March Media Frenzy On The Fraser Coast

FRASER COAST: Fraser Island is arguably the world’s biggest natural theme park and its pristine wilderness understandably draws a lot of year-round attention from the world’s media… however March has seen a higher influx of media interest than usual thanks to collaborative efforts between industry and local operators. 

The Fraser Coast was definitely the flavor of the month in Germany last month as freelancer, Gabriele Mielcke, writing for one of Germany’s leading daily newspapers - The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Faz - added Fraser Island to her ‘Aussie must dos’ on a recent trip along the east coast. Hosted by Kingfisher Bay Resort, Ms Mielcke hit Fraser Island’s sand tracks on a Beauty Spots day tour, indulged in some bush walking and tried her hand on the resort’s Segway personal transporters.

The World’s Number One female soccer player, Nadine Angerer, recently took time off from her gruelling training schedule with The Brisbane Roar to spend a long weekend on Fraser. German-born Nadine tweeted and Facebooked to her fans and followers and the visit was picked up by European media including travel website, Australien-info.de in March.

Most recently, popular German TV actor, Richy Mueller, visited both Fraser and Lady Elliot islands with a crew from N-TV to film a travel show focusing on Australia’s Nature Coast – an area stretching from the Sunshine Coast to the Fraser Coast. Enzo Andreuzzi from Enzo’s on the Beach joined with Fraser Coast Opportunities, Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Peter Meyer, Vicki Mullins from Lady Elliot Eco Resort, the crew from Tasman Venture and Sunshine Coast Destination Limited to showcase natural attractions including bush tucker at Seabelle, stand-up paddle boarding at Eli Creek, snorkelling, diving and the glass-bottomed boat at Lady Elliot and four-wheel-driving on Fraser during their whirlwind day stay.

N-TV is the leading news channel in German-speaking Europe with a viewership of 500,000. This Fraser Coast episode will support a substantial marketing campaign by Australia’s Nature Coast partners which includes more than 300 Queensland billboards and a 20-page feature in leading tourism publication, Abenteuer und Reisen.

The UK was also represented on Fraser Island as Zoe Parker, the winner of a joint competition between UK’s Channel Five, Kingfisher Bay Resort and Tourism and Events Queensland UK, claimed her ultimate prize – a trip to meet the stars of Neighbours in Melbourne, followed by a week of relaxing on the world’s largest sand island. The competition ran in the UK last November to an average audience of 1.2million viewers per screening.

Dutch Instagrammer Eeclo Roos (using the Instagram moniker @croyable) wowed his 400,000 Instagram followers with gorgeous images of Fraser. Eeclo was in Queensland as part of Tourism and Events Queensland’s Room 753 social media program, which saw them invite 22 of the world’ most trusted digital influences – bloggers, Instagrammers, photographers and videographers - to travel the state and document their travel experiences.

On Fraser Island, Eeclo teamed with resident photographer (and part time Cool Dingo Tour Guide), Peter Meyer for the stay. Eeclo’s shots of a lone mangrove, soldier crabs and the walking tracks near Kingfisher Bay Resort, a dingo on 75-Mile Beach, the gorgeous Butterfly Lakes (viewed from above thanks to Air Fraser Island) and Indian Head have attracted thousands of ‘likes’ from his followers.

Rounding out the international contingent was a group from Hong Kong’s Apple Daily – the country’s number one e-newspaper with daily readership figures in excess of 1.5 million. With Hong Kong celebrity ‘Baby John’ Choi at the helm, this crew set about on a series of crazy challenges which showcased the Fraser Explorer and Cool Dingo touring experiences on Fraser Island.

Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Group Marketing Manager, Kerry Brough, said major drawcards like Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island, helped the Fraser Coast live up to its tag-line “where nature comes alive” and certainly made the region more attractive to international media.

“The UK, Germany, Europe are very big source markets for us and China is an emerging market, so we’re hoping these collaborative efforts between operators, tourism bodies and media will help attract more tourists to our region.” she said.

Closer to home, Australian Traveller Magazine has just named Fraser Island as #33 in their list of 100 Greatest Holidays of Australia citing the following reasons for making the list: “Fraser Island isn’t just jaw-droppingly beautiful, but her many luminous lakes, sparkling clean dunes and perfect forests – she’s filled with enough history, both modern and ancient, and an array of flora, fauna and natural wonders large enough to capture the imagination of every inquisitive mind”.

Diving on the Great Barrier Reef came in at a very respectable #13 and swimming with Manta Rays on Lady Elliot Island rounded out the regional attractions at #85.
