QUEENSLAND: Fraser Island is an iconic Aussie destination, so it is only fitting that, come January 26, the team at Kingfisher Bay Resort will introduce their international guests to the age-old Aussie traditions of 'thong throwing' and lamingtons.

The resort, on Fraser Island's western side, has a jam-packed Australia Day activity line up including an Aussie-themed morning tea*; beach cricket and beach volleyball; face painting and sand castle competitions for the kids; Triple J's hottest 100 countdown; and all the action of The Australian Open on the big screen in The Sand Bar.

General Manager, David Hay, said there were still rooms available at both Kingfisher Bay Resort and Eurong Beach Resort for guests who wanted to take full advantage of the Australia Day long weekend.

"We've got some great accommodation deals and Australia Day activities available at both resorts," he said. "There's also availability on our full-day and two-day accommodated Fraser Island tours from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach."

As with any long weekend, Mr Hay warned holidaymakers to book tours and barges in advance to avoid disappointment.

"Our Reservations lines are open with enquiries and visitors can check out bot the Kingfisher Bay and Eurong Beach websites for the best available accommodation rates on Fraser or call 1800 FRASER for ferry and touring requirements," he said.

"Fraser is a great place to spend time with the family away from electronic distractions and we are currently seeing small schooling fish as well as Mullets, Mangrove Jacks and Sand Whiting being caught off the jetty for those fisher folk amongst us."

"On Australia Day, we'll just enhance the Fraser Island experience by injecting a little 'Aussieness' into the holiday and the good news is our activities aren't just restricted to house guests."

Kingfisher Bay's regular Day Away package from Hervey Bay bundles a courtesy pick up from accommodation houses or Urangan marina, ferry transfers, morning tea, set menu lunch at the Sand Bar, Ranger-guided canoe paddle, a spot of fishing – and on Australia Day it'll also include the Aussie activities. Day Away is priced at $65 for adults and $35 for children aged 4-14.

To round out the day, the 22nd annual Kingfisher Bay Regatta will provide some hotly contested yachting action on the Great Sandy Strait from January 25-27.

Over on the eastern beach, Eurong Beach's bakers will be whipping up some meat pies and lamingtons. There will also be limbo and costume competitions at The Beach Bar; balloon giveaways for the kids; DJ Sam and his home-grown hits countdown and an Aussie-themed BBQ night complete with prawns on the Barbie and beer upgrade.

*Some costs apply – please check Kingfisher Bay Resort's online What's On Guide for details.
