FRASER ISLAND: Visitors to Fraser Island could be forgiven for doing a double take on February 23 as staff at Kingfisher Bay Resort and Eurong Beach Resort gear up to celebrate Australia Day II.

Kingfisher Bay Resort, on Fraser Island’s western side, has a jam-packed Australia Day line up including an Aussie-themed morning tea with mini pavlovas, lamingtons and Anzac biscuits; beach cricket and beach volleyball; face painting for the kids; and a perennial favourite - Aussie sausage sizzle and BBQ*.

Resort General Manager, Warwick Kahl, said his team was looking forward to the fun and games on Fraser Island over the Australia Day II weekend.

“We didn’t let Ex Cyclone Oswald cast a dampener on Australia Day the first time around and we’re pretty sure events like thong throwing and beach cricket will be a real eye opener for our international guests on Feb 23,” he said. “Who knows, we may even be able to entice some of them to try some vegemite from our breakfast buffet.”

Mr Kahl encouraged people looking for a mini break to check the Kingfisher Bay and Eurong Beach websites – and for Fraser Coast locals to head to the Staycations website - for the best available accommodation rates on island, but added that day guests were also very welcome at both resorts.

“Whilst we don’t have an Aussie Day public holiday this time around, we do have some great deals in the market and Fraser is the perfect place for a mini weekend break,” he said. “We’ll just add to their experience on Feb 23 by injecting a little ‘Aussieness’ into the holiday.

Australia Day activities aren’t restricted to house guests with visitors to Fraser welcome. The resort’s regular Day Away package – for day visitors - bundles courtesy pick up from accommodation houses or Urangan marina, ferry transfers, morning tea, set menu lunch at the Sand Bar (or choice of Australiana BBQ), Ranger-guided canoe paddle, a spot of fishing – and on Australia Day it’ll also include the Aussie activities. Day Away is priced at $65 for adults and $35 for children aged 4-14. Family passes are available.

On the eastern beach, Eurong Beach Resort bakers will be providing their usual variety of meat pies and lamingtons; shop staff will be kitted out in their dinky-di Aussie fashion and there will be Australia Day II limbo and costume competitions.

And for the real die hard Australia Day II fans, it doesn’t get more Aussie than Eurong’s famous XXXX Beach Bar where DJ Jaydah will be pumping his Top 100 Homegrown Hits Countdown till the sun goes down.
