How to get to Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari (Fraser Island)

Getting to K’gari (Fraser Island) is easier than you think! Whether you prefer to travel by air, sea, or rail, this World Heritage-listed paradise is just a short journey away. Located only five nautical miles from River Heads, K’gari is seamlessly connected to the mainland, with regular ferry services from Hervey Bay making access quick and convenient.

Kingfisher Bay Resort's Mainland Reception will appear on Google Maps as 54 Ariadne Street, River Heads Road, River Heads QLD 4655.

From Brisbane

The journey is approximately 3.5 hours' drive north of Brisbane City. Join the Bruce Highway and stay north on this route to Maryborough. Take the Maryborough exit off the highway onto the Maryborough - Hervey Bay Road.

From Maryborough

Follow the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road North toward Hervey Bay (16.8 kms). At the large roundabout, take the Booral Road exit and travel for approximately 12 kms. Then, turn right into River Heads Road and travel a further 9.6kms to arrive at Kingfisher Bay's Mainland Reception located at River Heads Shopping Village (on your right-hand side). River Heads Road is locally named Ariadne Street.

From Bundaberg

The journey is approximately 1.5 hours' drive south. Follow the Bruce Highway south. Turn off at Torbanlea and follow signs to Hervey Bay (21kms). Turn left onto the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road. Travel 0.7kms and turn right on to Booral Road. Travel for approximately 12 kms, then turn right into River Heads Road and travel 9.6kms to arrive at Kingfisher Bay's Mainland Reception located at River Heads Shopping Village (on your right-hand side). River Heads Road is locally named Ariadne Street.

Secure Parking Facility

Upon check-in at Mainland Reception, guests will be issued with a secure pin number to gain access to the parking facilities. Bookings are highly recommended and can be made directly with our Reservations Team on + 61 7 4194 9300 or 1800 072 555 (within Australia).

Four services travel between Kingfisher Bay Resort and River Heads daily, with an approximate journey time of 50 minutes.

Guests are advised to arrive at the Mainland Reception 40 minutes prior to ferry departure to allow time to check-in. Kingfisher Bay Resort's courtesy shuttle service will provide transport to the ferry 10 minutes prior to departure time. If your ferry is departing prior to 8:30am, please continue to the end of River Heads Road, and check-in at the SeaLink K'gari Ticket Hut.

Pre-booking vehicle and passenger ferry transfers is recommended and can be made on the SeaLink K'gari Website, or by calling our friendly Reservations Team on 1800 372 737.

Visitors can easily reach Kingfisher Bay Resort from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne via direct flights to Hervey Bay Airport (HVB). Upon arrival at Hervey Bay Airport, guests can take a short 15-minute transfer to River Heads, where the Kingfisher Bay Resort ferry departs.

Our friendly Reservations Team can assist in arranging return airport transfers from Hervey Bay Airport to Kingfisher Bay Resort's Mainland Reception.

One of our guest service team members will meet you at the bus pick-up area, located at the eastern end of the Hervey Bay Airport terminal, and transfer you to our Mainland Reception for check-in and transfer to the next available ferry service.

Please be sure to consider the airport transfer schedule and your connecting ferry time before booking your flight to Hervey Bay. If you require our Porter service, please allow extra time to identify and collect your bags at our Mainland Reception.

Please note: The airport transfer service is unable to meet any flights departing Hervey Bay prior to 10.30am or flights arriving to Hervey Bay after 3.00pm. This service is unable to be delayed. If flights are late, the next pickup time will apply, or guests may make their own way to River Heads Mainland Reception via Taxi at their own cost. Passengers who miss the allocated pick-up window will need to make alternative travel arrangements at their own expense.

Coach:

All major coach operators have daily transfers to and from Hervey Bay, however departures and timings are dependent on availability. Please note this service cannot be facilitated by our Reservations team and must be organised directly by the guest.

Train:

From Brisbane, take the Tilt Train for a comfortable four-hour journey to Maryborough West Station. Enjoy panoramic views of the passing countryside, as well as onboard entertainment and a range of meal and snack options. A pre-booked transfer to Kingfisher Bay Resort's Mainland Reception can be arranged with our Reservations Team to coincide with your arrival at Maryborough West Train Station.

Access to K'gari and Kingfisher Bay Resort with the Tilt Train is available northbound or southbound.

Carve your own tracks on World Heritage-listed K'gari (Fraser Island)

Aussie Trax is an independent family owned business based in Hervey Bay, with an office conveniently located at the Kingfisher Village Store.

All vehicles come with training, maps and itineraries at no extra charge.

Drivers:

All drivers must be a minimum age of 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s licence, which must be presented for inspection when completing the contract of hire.

Itineraries:

First time 4WDing? No problem! Our team provide maps and tide times; as well as detailed itineraries to suit tidal conditions. These will maximise the use of your time, will guide you through the island's tracks and provide insightful background into the destination's top locations.

Safety Training:

Aussie Trax staff will provide all guests with a detailed safety briefing before travel. This alerts guests to potential hazards and provide key tips to ensure you can navigate the island without hassle.

Fuel:

The cars are taken out full and returned full, there is no extra charge for kilometres. Should the car require refuelling Aussie Trax will charge $3.00 per litre to refuel the vehicle at the hirers' cost.

National Park Permit:

A vehicle permit to drive on K'gari (Fraser Island) is required by Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service. This permit is normally purchased at the time of hire (from the resort reception) and is not included in the rates. Aussie Trax will charge an administration fee of $8.50 per for each National Park Permit.

As the world's largest sand island, the destination comprises primarily of sand tracks - the only sealed roads on K'gari are within the Kingfisher Bay Resort grounds, and within the grounds of K'gari Beach Resort on the eastern coast.

Standard vehicles can still travel over on the barge and be utilised within the resort (the ferry lands directly at the resort's entrance), however are not suitable for driving beyond the perimeter of the resort property.

If you do plan to navigate the sand tracks yourself, a 4WD vehicle with suitable clearance is required, as well as a driving permit. Please visit the Queensland Parks and Wildlife website for more details, tyre pressure recommendations and updated track conditions.

Please note that travellers do not need their own 4WD to experience K'gari, as there are a range of guided tours departing the resort daily to the island's top bucket list locations.
