It's back for 2014 and it's better than ever! The Fraser Island biannual Long Lunch is a must-do event on the Fraser Coast calendar as the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce calls on members and friends to come together to celebrate regional cuisine and to raise money for charity.

You can’t always choose the experiences which happen to you within your lifetime, you can only choose your response. Remembering that each conscious step you make along the way begins to define who you are. This becomes your story, the story you will speak of in years to come. Above all else, it was important for me to not be the victim in my story - Jonty Bush.

The smallest act of violence can have devastating and permanent outcomes for victims and their families and wide social circle. With the message ‘One Punch Can Kill’ seemingly never out of headlines, it is timely that victims’ rights advocate and pioneer of the 2007 ‘One Punch Can Kill’ public awareness campaign, Jonty Bush, will take centre stage on June 27 to share her incredible story.

Senseless violence and searing personal tragedy marked her early adulthood and set Jonty on a path that has seen her become one of Australia’s leading advocates for the rights of victims of violent crimes.

Jonty was only twenty-one when her younger sister was murdered. A few months later her father died after being punched in an unprovoked attack when on  a contact visit with his niece (see charity info below). Jonty tackled her grief head-on and signed up as a volunteer for the Queensland Homicide Victim’s Support Group. Her compassion for other victims and her tireless commitment to giving them a voice and to fight for justice eventually led to her appointment as Chief Executive Officer.

After her father’s attacker was acquitted of manslaughter, Jonty successfully lobbied for a review of murder and manslaughter laws in Queensland. She then went on to pioneer the successful ‘One Punch Can Kill’ educational campaign, which was adopted by the Queensland Government in 2007. Starting as a grassroots project on the streets of Brisbane, this campaign is now recognised as one of Queensland’s (and arguably Australia’s) leading anti-violence campaigns.

Jonty has since completed her Masters in Criminology and Criminal Justice, has been appointed to Queensland’s inaugural Sentencing Advisory Council and continues to work and support government and community organisations with anti-violence and crime prevention strategies.
