FRASER ISLAND: They’re a MOtley bunch on Fraser, but it’s all for a good cause. As Movember fundraising kicks off around the country today, so to the cool-shaven men Kingfisher Bay Resort, Eurong Beach Resort, Fraser Island Barges, Cool Dingo Tours and Fraser Explorer Tours will cast aside good grooming standards and grow moustaches to raise awareness and much needed funds for men's health.

Last year thirty eight men from Fraser Island - including Group General Manager, David Hay - put their very best handlebars, crumb catchers and trucker moustaches forward - ably supported by their considerably less hirsute female fundraising counterparts - to raise awareness of the two biggest health issues men face – prostate cancer and male mental health.

This year, the Motley bunch numbers are still being finalised, but resort, touring and marine staff had jumped at the chance to participate.

Kingfisher Bay Resort General Manager, David Hay, said the resort traditionally sponsored environmental charities like the Australian Marine Conservation Society but, as one of the largest employer’s on the Fraser Coast, had decided to support Movember to remind their male staff members of the importance of early detection and diagnosis when it came to health.

“We’ll start with clean shaven faces and over the course of the month will groom, trim and wax and hopefully grow some impressive moustaches and even more impressive fundraising balances,” he said.

Mr Hay said his team of hirsute hair growers took their task seriously and their support crew – the girls in the HR Department – would be charting their progress over the month and sharing updates through the group’s social media sites.

Funds raised over the month will be directed to programs run by Movember and their men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative.
