24-26 January 2015: Australia Day On Fraser Island

Australia Day is always a fun affair on the world's largest sand island... just ask Captain Australia Australia Day is always a fun affair on the world's largest sand island... just ask Captain Australia

With 2014 behind us, the folks at the resort - including the newly-crowned Captain Australia - are gearing up to celebrate all things Australian.  Australia Day falls on Monday, Jan 26, so why not make the most of the long weekend with a mini break on Fraser Island?  Oh, and don't forget to bring a costume!

Check our Summertime Deal for your Aus Day celebrations with rooms and brekkie from $148.

Whilst we won't be "throwing another shrimp on the barbie" this Australia Day, we'll be running Aussie limbo comps for the nimble guests; thong throwing contests (it's our national footwear of choice!); and our very own beach cricket comp to celebrate our national day - and we're celebrating ONE day early for all the folks that are staying over the long weekend. There's also plenty of action to be had on Fraser Island's sand tracks... plus you won't want to miss the action of the 23rd annual Kingfisher Bay Regatta on the Great Sandy Strait.

Here's a little taste of what's in store... and because Australia Day falls on a Monday, we'll be making sure most of our activities kick off on the Sunday, so you won't miss out before heading home!

Saturday, January 24

Sunday, January 25

  • 09.30am: More Regatta racing action with the first race of the day!
  • From 10.00am: Get those hips a-wiggling and try your hand at a spot of Beach Limbo with our very own Captain Australia. How low can you go?
  • From 11.00am: Forget caber tossing, how good are you at hurling Australia's national footwear - the humble thong - through the air? Join Captain Australia as we start chucking thongs left, right and centre on the western beach - and all in the name of national pride.
  • If you want to get out and about in the Great Australian outdoors, check the What's On Guide for our free Ranger-guided walks and activities.
  • From 2.15pm: If you love lamingtons or are curious to try Australia's national dish (sponge cake covered in chocolate and coconut) then you're in luck. Lamos, as the locals call them, will be on sale in all of our food outlets.  And, if the mood takes you and your taste-buds are tickled... join in our Lamington Eating Competition to win great prizes!
  • From 3.30pm: Move over Michael Clarke, our very own Captain Australia won't be bowling the maidens over, but he is set to lead one of our beach cricket teams to certain victory. Bring the family, come down to the beach and join in all the action.
  • From 5.00pm: Donning an Aussie flag, some zinc and thongs on Australia Day isn't done just for fun, it's also a matter of national pride... and our very own Captain Australia will be picking the best of the bunch to win some dinki-di prizes.
  • Arriving guests will be 'treated' to lamingtons and vegemite sandwiches... yep, it's an acquired taste, but we do come from the land down under.

Monday, January 26

  • 10.00am: Gentlemen, unfurl your sails for the Australia Day Handicap race (Kingfisher Bay back to Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay) and the end of the 23rd Kingfisher Bay Regatta.
  • Australia Day is not complete without the Triple J Hottest 100, which will be played at The Jetty Hut and The Sand Bar over the course of the day.  It's the perfect musical backdrop to the very Aussie surrounds.
  • It's just not cricket without watching the Australia vs India match on the big screen. It's all happening in The Maheno restaurant from 1.20pm.
  • Tennis fans won't miss out as we screen highlights from The Australian Open on the big screen from 08.00am.

Here's a little ditty to get you in the mood, and if the weather turns, we'll be joining two Aussie icons - Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman on the big screen for a special OZ Day screening of Australia (the movie) from 10.00am - it seemed apropos!
